Wound Care

Wound Care

Proper wound care is essential to ensure correct healing and to prevent the risk of an acute (short-lived) cut or abrasion becoming a chronic (long term) wound. Wounds can happen to anyone - a burn while cooking, a dog bite or a graze from a fall.

How can your UFS Pharmacy help?

If you’d like general advice or guidance about wound care, drop in to any UFS pharmacy and speak to one of our friendly pharmacists. We have a large range of dressings and topical treatments to assist with wound management.

Please note that for specific advice or treatment, you should make an appointment with your GP at a UFS Medical Centre. If you have a wound requiring urgent attention, please attend Ballarat’s Medicare Urgent Care Clinic or the closest emergency department.

The Chronic Wound Consumables Scheme (CWCS)

Wound care can be expensive, and most people pay the full cost of the products they need for treatment which can cause financial stress.  The Chronic Wound Consumables Scheme (CWCS) helps eligible patients by covering the full cost of wound care products, such as bandages, dressings, and adhesives.

The CWCS can support people with diabetes with a chronic wound who are:

  • aged over 65 years, or a First Nations person aged 50 years or over and,
  • do not receive any health-related Government funding, including through NDIS, DVA, Home Care Packages or other Government-funded wound care clinics.
