Urinary Tract Infection Treatment

The Victorian Government’s Chemist Care Now Program, makes it possible for some patients to receive medications or treatments at a local pharmacy, without having to get a prescription first. All UFS pharmacies are participating in this program. The following treatment is available at UFS pharmacies:

Treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections

Shingles (also called herpes zoster) is the disease caused when the chickenpox virus reactivates. Shingles can cause severe pain that can last for months. 

A urinary traction infection (UTI) is caused by micro-organisms or germs, usually bacteria. The different types of a UTI can include:

- Cystitis - infection of the bladder. Cystitis is the most common lower urinary tract infection
- Urethritis - infection of the urethra

- Pyelonephritis - infection of the kidneys

- Vaginitis - infection of the vagina

If you have any of the following symptoms, you may have a urinary tract infection:

- stinging or burning when passing urine

- pain above the pubic bone

- feeling the need to pass urine frequently or bladder still feels full after passing urine

- cloudy, bloody or very smelly urine.

A consultation to treat an uncomplicated urinary tract infection will involve your pharmacist meeting with you in a private consulting room to explain the service and ask for your consent to be part of the Chemist Care Now program. They will ask questions about the care you need to assess if they can treat you, or if they need to refer to your doctor.

If you are female and aged between 16-65 years speak to a UFS pharmacist as you may be able to get UTI treatment.
